How Much Wallpaper With Repeat Calculator

How Much Wallpaper With Repeat Calculator

This Calculator will help provide an estimate for how much wallpaper you might need for a room based on the room’s dimensions. It will factor in windows and doors, as well as whether your wallpaper has a repeating pattern.

You can enter the square feet of coverage your wallpaper provides, or use the wallpaper calculator’s default value of 28 square feet per single roll of wallpaper.

How do I calculate how much wallpaper I need?

To calculate how much wallpaper you will need, you would first need the following information:

  1. Length and width of the room being wallpapered.
  2. Height of the walls (in inches).
  3. Square footage of openings that won’t be wallpapered (doors and windows)
  4. Distance (in inches) of a repeating pattern, if any.

With that information you would first add the length and width of the room.  Next, convert the height of your walls to feet (height divided by 12 equals height (feet).  You would then multiply the length/width of your room with the converted height of the walls to find your room’s square footage.

Once you have your room’s square footage, you make any necessary adjustments to your room’s square footage, such as:

  • Deducting the square footage of openings such as windows and doors (that won’t be wallpapered).
  • Adding a buffer for anticipated waste (usually 5% to 15%).
  • Adding an allowance to compensate for repeating patterns (if any).

How to measure for wallpaper with windows

To measure wallpaper for a room with windows and doors, you would multiply the length and width of each window and door to find their square footage then add them all together.  Next, subtract the square footage of your openings from the room’s square footage.

How much wallpaper do i need for a 10×10 wall? For a 10 foot by 10 foot wall (100 sq ft) with no windows or doors, you might need 4.40 single rolls of wallpaper.
How much wallpaper do i need for a 12×12 room? For a 12 foot by 12 foot room with 8 foot walls with one window and one door, you might need 15.31 single rolls of wallpaper.
How many rolls of wallpaper for an average room? For the average room at 11 foot by 13 foot with 8 foot walls, with one window and one door, you might need 15.31 single rolls of wallpaper.

Calculating How Much Wallpaper You Need For Repeating Patterns

A repeating pattern will mean that you will need to align each new section of wallpaper in a way that allows the pattern layout to remain uniform with the previously hung section of wallpaper.

Each subsequent section of wallpaper will need to be cut longer in order to match the pattern.

How much wallpaper do i need with pattern repeat

Let’s say your wallpaper has a repeating pattern that is 12 inches apart and your wall is 96 inches tall.  We divide the wall height by the pattern distance, 96 divided by 12, which equals .125.  This means that for every 96 inch section of wall, you will be using an additional 12.5% of wallpaper  to match the pattern on the previously hung section of wallpaper.  The adjustments in trying to match patterns results in unavoidable waste.  The larger the pattern distance, the higher the percentage of waste.

Where we previously determined the amount of square feet of wallpaper we needed, we’ll now also add the percentage of the repeating pattern to allow for waste that happens as we try to match a pattern.  We increase our square footage with the percentage of waste we calculated based on the pattern distance.

How much does it cost to have someone put up wallpaper?

This calculator will provide an estimate of what a contractor might charge in labor to install wallpaper, based on an average price of $1.37 – $2.44 per square foot (source: HomeWyse).  According to Angi.com, the labor cost to hang wallpaper can range from $1 to $7 per square foot.  HomeAdvisor says that the average cost to hang wallpaper is $524, whereas ThumbTack quoted the average cost at $300.

**This calculator will provide estimates based on input.  Factors such as square feet per roll, odd wall angles, and mistakes during application would impact these estimates.
